Who it helps.
Filipino residents, new arrivals and people with income or assets in more than one country.
Start by identifying the tax, the year and the responsible authority. This guide points to official information on Spanish income tax, cross-border questions, self-employment and local taxes, without assuming which rules apply to you personally.
Your next steps.
- 01
Gather income, withholding and foreign-tax records for the relevant year.
- 02
Use the questions below to find the right official guidance and assistance channel.
- 03
Confirm your filing and payment obligations before submitting; keep notices and personal financial records private.
These are general starting points. A qualified adviser can assess a cross-border or self-employment situation using your documents. This guide does not calculate tax or determine residency.
Common questions
Does my NIE or padrón make me a Spanish tax resident?
Not by itself. Tax residence (residencia fiscal) is separate from immigration status. AEAT considers time spent in Spain, economic interests and other circumstances; more than 183 days is one criterion, not the whole test. Where two countries treat you as resident, treaty rules can matter. Check your full situation with AEAT or a qualified adviser.
What about salary, rent or other income from the Philippines?
Spanish tax residents generally fall within IRPF on worldwide income (renta mundial), subject to applicable treaty provisions. Income does not automatically fall outside Spain’s rules because it is paid into a Philippine account. Gather records of income and tax paid abroad, then check the treatment for each type of income.
Will I pay tax twice on the same income?
Spain and the Philippines have an income-tax treaty. Which country may tax income and how relief works depends on the income category and your circumstances. Paying tax in one country does not automatically remove every obligation in the other. Keep proof of foreign tax paid and ask how the treaty applies to your case.
My payslip already deducts IRPF. Do I still need a return?
Withholding (retenciones) is an advance payment of tax. Whether you must file a declaración de la renta depends on the rules for that tax year and your income and circumstances. Check AEAT’s filing guide rather than assuming deductions on a payslip settle the question. Keep your annual pay and withholding certificate.
I want to freelance or open a business. Where do I start?
An economic activity can create obligations before it starts, while it operates and when it ends. AEAT’s guide explains census registration (alta censal), including Modelo 036, and the relevant tax duties. Review the guidance before starting; the taxes and returns required depend on the activity. Tax registration is only one part of setting up a business.
Do I need to report a Philippine bank account or property?
Some overseas assets and rights have separate information-reporting rules. Modelo 720 is an informative return, with different asset categories, conditions and exemptions. Do not assume every account must be reported, or that reporting income covers the asset-reporting question. Use AEAT’s current FAQs or ask an adviser about your ownership and balances.
Should I contact AEAT, the Catalan tax agency or the city?
Start with the authority responsible for the tax or named on your notice. AEAT handles national tax procedures such as IRPF. The Agència Tributària de Catalunya (ATC) has its own managed taxes and assistance channels. Barcelona’s Institut Municipal d’Hisenda handles municipal matters such as property tax (IBI) and vehicle tax (IVTM).
How do I check deadlines or get help with a tax notice?
Look for the tax year (ejercicio), form (modelo), payment or filing deadline (plazo), and reference on the notice. Use the responsible authority’s current calendar and help channel. AEAT’s general appointment service is separate from its annual income-return preparation service. If a deadline has passed or a letter is unclear, contact the authority promptly with the reference kept private.
