Read the Catalan on signs and letters. Say the Spanish at counters and appointments.

Who it helps.

Filipinos who need to read an official letter or ask a question at a counter.

In Barcelona you read Catalan and you speak Spanish. Street signs, council letters, health notices and school notes arrive in Catalan; most conversation at a counter, at work or with a neighbour happens in Spanish. This is a phrasebook for both, organised by situation: the words to recognise, and full sentences to say out loud. Pronunciation is written for a Filipino ear, not in phonetic symbols.

Your next steps.

  1. 01

Find your situation in the index, or search for one word.

  2. 02

Read the Catalan cards to match what is in front of you; read the Spanish cards aloud before you go.

  3. 03

Screenshot the card you need. It works with no signal.

Good to know

You do not need Catalan to live in Barcelona, and people switch to Spanish if you ask. Reading a little of it matters for one reason: official letters set deadlines, and a deadline you cannot read is a deadline you miss.
