Documents & getting started
My TIE is about to expire. How do I renew it?
Renewing a TIE is two procedures, not one, and the order matters. First you renew the authorisation — the permission to live and work in Spain — through the Oficina de Extranjería. Only once that renewal is granted do you go to the police for a new card. Someone who books a fingerprint appointment first, with nothing granted yet, is sent away. Checked 15 September 2026 against the Ministry of Inclusion’s information sheets and the Policía Nacional fee table.
Does this apply to me
Yes, if your card documents a temporary residence or residence-and-work authorisation with an expiry date. If your card says *larga duración* (long-term residence), the permission itself does not expire — only the card does, and the section further down is the one for you. If you are in Spain with no authorisation there is nothing to renew: the route is arraigo, and the free advice is at SAIER (Servei d’Atenció a Immigrants, Emigrants i Refugiats, Barcelona City Council’s free service for migrants).
Step one: renew the authorisation
| When | During the two months before the expiry date of your authorisation. |
| Late filing | Accepted up to three months after expiry, but the sheet adds “sin perjuicio de la incoación del correspondiente procedimiento sancionador” — an infringement case can be opened. Do not plan on this window. |
| While you wait | Filing inside the window keeps the old authorisation valid until they decide. Your expired card plus the filing receipt is what you show an employer or a bank. |
| Decision time | Three months from the day the file enters the register. If nothing is notified by then, Hoja 13 says the request is taken as approved by silence, and you can ask for a certificate saying so. |
| Fee | A separate fee from the card’s: modelo 790 código 052, under the heading for your route. |
| Where | The “Lugar de presentación” line on the sheet for your route says where to file. |
Each route has its own sheet at inclusion.gob.es — Hoja 13 for employed work, 15 for self-employed, 10 for family reunification, 7 for the non-lucrative permit — and the two-months-before window is the same in each we read.
Step two: the new card
Within one month of being notified that the renewal is granted, apply in person for the new TIE. That means a fingerprint appointment through the official cita previa site, form EX-17 with the box *Renovación de tarjeta* ticked, the paid tasa 790 código 012, your passport, a recent colour photo on a white background, and the favourable decision. If your address changed, add a volant d’empadronament less than three months old.
What it costs
From the Policía Nacional fee table, read 15 September 2026:
| Card | Tasa 790-012 |
|---|---|
| Renewal of temporary residence | €19.30 |
| Long-term residence or long-term-EU card | €21.87 |
Paid at a bank counter on the printed 790-012 form. Booking the appointment is free.
Long-term residence: the card renews, not the permission
Holders of larga duración renew the card every five years, and every ten years once they are past thirty. The window is the same — the two months before the card expires, late filing accepted up to three months after, under the same sanction wording. This one is a police procedure from the start: EX-17 and tasa 012 at the comisaría, with no Oficina de Extranjería step.
What goes wrong
- Booking a huella appointment before the renewal is granted. The card documents a permission; no new permission, no new card.
- Waiting for the card to expire before starting. The window opens two months out and Barcelona appointments are scarce, so start on the first day of it.
- Sending a photo of your passport or TIE to someone on WhatsApp who offers to “do the renewal”. No office needs an unredacted copy from a stranger, and a passport image is what identity fraud is built from.
- Flying home while the renewal is pending, without an autorización de regreso — see the next question.
